Sage Cycles Beginner Ride
Our beginner ride is suitable for all ages and only requires a reasonable amount of fitness. Most new riders have not been on a bicycle since they were children and we understand this. Our Level 1 beginner loop is mostly flat with only a few fun obstacles to conquer. Bring your bike and your helmet and join us to discover the canyon.
  • Meet at Sage Cycles for a bike clinic and free product samples.
  • Saturday 9am at 12340 Bandera Road # 106, 1 block outside 1604 on the right.
  • 15 to 30 minute bike clinic on various topics.
  • Carpool to Government Canyon
  • Ride a 6 mile loop of easy terrain with a few easy obstacles.
  • Then we revel in our accomplishments.
  • If recent rain, email us to check on ride status: rick@sagecycles.com
Level 1 Beginner Route
  • A 6 mile loop through the Front Country section.
  • Our first rest stop/obstacle is called Log Hop, Here we practice hopping over small obstacles.
  • Our next rest stop/obstacle is The Little Dipper. Here we practice riding through a small dry creekbed.
  • Our next rest stop/obstacle is called $10 Hill. Here we challenge each other to ride a small but steep hill and the first time a rider clears the hill, they win a $10 gift certificate from Sage Cycles.
  • Then it's back to the parking lot and back to Sage Cycles for free recovery drinks.

Level 2 Beginner Route
  • Our Level 2 route is a continuation of Level 1 but extends into the Back Country
  • We start out at the Back Country trailhead
  • We ride 3 miles along rocky but wide trail with a few ups and downs.
  •  As we get deep into the canyon we stop at first creek crossing.
  • Then we ride 3 miles back for a total of 6 miles.
  • Then it's back to the parking lot and back to Sage Cycles for free recovery drinks.

Intermediate/Advanced Ride Meets at 9.00am - wheels down at 9:15

Intermediate/Advanced Info. The advanced portion of the ride will be considered a true training ride and the Intermediate ride will be a regular ride at a more social pace. The two rides will split and probably rejoin together on the road back to the shop. The purpose of the change is the give the advanced riders more ride time without spending more time on the ride.
Advanced Ride
The advanced ride will be a Full Drop ride. This means that if you get dropped because of your fitness or a mechanical, advanced riders will not wait. Also, the advanced ride is for those that already know the route, we will not wait at the turns. If you dont know where the turns are, you need to ride with Intermediate group until you learn the route or be fast enough not to get dropped by the rider in front of you. Unless it is hot, the advanced ride will skip the first water stop and just continue on to Far Reaches. Advanced ride will not stop at Crossroads but will take a right and continue all the way to the back of Sendero Balcones then Joe Johnston route back to the D parking lot. Here is the one and only water stop and regroup of the advanced ride and the intermediate riders may be here too. If there are at least 3 advanced riders that have regrouped here, then the ride preems are on for the first rider back to the fire station. Sprint back to the shop through the front country to GC entry road to Galm to 1560 to the fire station. So, in summary the advanced route is Front Country to parking lot D to Recharge to Far Reaches to right on Sendero Balcones to Joe Johnston to Parking lot D to Front Country to Shop

All riders must still check in at the guard shack upon entering Government Canyon.
